Which Variety Of Apples Are Best For Cooking? Apple Recipes

It’s apple season and with all the varieties, wonder which apples are best for what recipes?   Here is a quick apple guide to help.

Cortland Apples – Best for: Applesauce (the soft flesh easily dissolves to mush)
Also good for: Cooking with chicken and snacking
Recipe: Chicken Sautee’ with apples

MacIntosh Apples – Tender, juicy Canadian apple
Best for: Applesauce
Recipe:  Apple Kuchen

Golden Delicious – When this apple is fresh and mildly acidic, its crunch and flavor are unbeatable
Use for: Crisps, Pies and cobblers (this apple can withstand heat without losing its shape or zing)
Good for: Salads and sandwiches; snacking
Recipe: Apple Crisp

Rome – A tart apple that stays crisp longer than most
Best for: Pies and cobblers
Recipe: Potato-Apple Gratin

Johnathon – Tart, tender, and brilliantly red
Best for: Savory cooking—tart varieties go well with rich meats, such as sausages, pork, and duck.
Good for: Applesauce too
Recipe: Clafouti

Fuji – Sweet and aromatic, juicy and crisp
Best for: Raw apple salads or slaws and snacking
Recipe: Cabbage and Apple Slaw
