This summer when hamburger is at a great price and it makes sense to buy up some to make into hamburger patties for barbequing use my easy tip to keep the patties separate while freezing. Using this frugal tip with recycled cereal bags will make barbecuing and freezing meats very simple. It tip on how to keep hamburgers separate when freezing works beautifully for chicken, fish fillets, steaks or other meats. It keeps the meats separate and much easier to work with. Reuse, recycle and re-purpose! There are many more uses for recycled cereal bag inserts too – see the tips section.
I gave you a tip HERE a few days ago about colorfasting material. I used the colorfast process on a new pair of dark jeans that I want to keep dark. My dear husband AKA Camera Man just had to film it! ? Maybe I should rename this post “don’t turn your husband’s underwear baby blue” since my new jeans would have done that, but you get the picture.
Not sure if your clothes are colorfast? If a label reads “wash separately,” “wash in cold water,” “hand wash,” “do not use detergent” or “turn inside out to launder” may indicate that the dyes in these items are not colorfast. To test, soak an inconspicuous corner of the material in a cup of warm water and a teaspoon of detergent for two to three minutes (less time for pre-treatment stain removers; follow instructions on the product label); then blot with a white paper towel. If the colors do not change, run or come off on the paper towel, and if the item is definitely washable.
USE Carbona Color Run Remover if you do turn your clothes a wild new color. It is a God send and works!! I just used some a few days ago when I washed a new red shirt. Ugh!
Buying napkins, paper towels and disposable items may seem convenient, but in the long run on a yearly basis you can tie up literally thousands of dollars on disposable. We use mostly cloth napkins in our house. I do have some paper napkins and paper towels but for the most part I use cloth. The last time I stocked up and bought 6 packages of paper napkins was 18 months ago and I am using my last package now.
In the morning I put out a napkin with breakfast and most days we use just one each. I keep it nicely folded next to each persons place (unless it’s one of those extra messy kids day!)
I buy only white 100% cotton napkins using discounts at Bed Bath and Beyond. To keep them white and clean I put them through a pre-wash hot cycle, and add a 1/2 cup of vinegar in the rinse cycle to keep them soft and cut any greasy or residue. Do not use softener or the napkins won’t absorb liquids well.
I wait until I have a full load (we have about 60 cloth napkins) and wash them all at one time. I set the timer on my washer so it is finishing up washing when I get up in the morning, and then I pop the napkins in the dryer and fold all them in just about 10 minutes while watching the morning news! Super easy!

This is the BEST pancake syrup I have ever tasted, it really is the perfect pancake syrup. Make a double recipe, because when it is cold right out of the refrigerator – it’s the most amazing dip for apples or poured over ice cream!! This makes a buttery rich syrup when warm but takes on a caramal-ie flavor when it’s cold. I also use a big teaspoon in my morning hot coffee -try it, it is incredible!!!
Pair this recipe with the Perfect Buttermilk Pancakes from scratch recipe, perfect pancakes every time.
Buttermilk Syrup Recipe~Recipe Yields 2 cups
1 1/2 cups white sugar
3/4 cup buttermilk
1/2 cup butter
2 tablespoons corn syrup
1 teaspoon baking soda
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
Mix all ingredients, except vanilla, in a sauce pan large enough to accommodate a rolling boil. Bring the ingredient to a rolling boil and cook for 7 minutes. Remove from heat and add vanilla.
I would recommend doubling this recipe and keep it in the refrigerator for future use.
