Walgreens 101

Tips and Resources  for  Walgreens 101:

OVERVIEW:
Walgreen reward program is called Register Rewards (RR). RR (a.k.a. Catalina coupons) is manufacturer coupons printed from a Catalina machine at the register. These are generated when you purchase certain products that are offering RR for the purchase. The ad shows weekly RR deals. Monthly RR deals are not generally printed anywhere, usually notification is on the store signage by the product ~or a complete surprise when one pops out on an item you purchase! Some stores will honor Catalina’s with any store name on them. For example, the military commissary accepts Catalina’s (see here), our local Vons accepts them, too.

RR expire 2 weeks from print date.

RR is a manufacturer coupon good toward just about ANY item purchased.*

RRs are savings which can be used “like cash” on your next order. Exceptions are tobacco, alcohol, tax, lottery tickets, money orders, prescriptions, stamps, dairy, or any gift cards or pre-paid cards. However, some stores still allow RRs to be used on some of these items, so ymmv.

There is no “store card” necessary to receive RRs.

Coupons print out from the Catalina machine also.

Registers will not accept more manufacturer coupons/rr than items. See Fillers section below.

GET STARTED:
Pay close attention to the ad. Buy the exact items advertised to receive RR. Using coupons on these items should not affect whether your RR prints. Unfortunately, it seems a few stores have their registers programmed so RR will not print if coupons are used – but if this is true, it is VERY rare.

If you complete more than one register rewards deal in one transaction, one reward for each different RR deal should print. But you will not receive more than one RR for the same deal.

i.e.: If a Crest toothpaste purchase generates a $3rr, and you buy 3 in one tractions. Only one RR will print. Conversely, if you purchase 3 Crest toothpaste, one at a time in separate transactions, each transaction will generate a RR. There is no limit of transactions at Walgreens. BUT you can purchase the Crest deal & a Razor deal and as many individual deals on one transaction and receive the appropriate RR for each item.

If you are planning on buying a mass quantity of a RR deal that is coming up contact the store, they will work with you to pre-order for you. Personally, I do not like clearing out a shelf. Coupon etiquette applies, I believe.

ROLLING REGISTER REWARDS:
You cannot “roll” RRs into the same deal 99% of the time. For example, if you use a RR from Kellogg’s to purchase more Kellogg’s items; you will NOT get another RR. The best way to “roll” is to use your Kellogg’s RR to complete a different RR deal.

i.e.: If you have a $3 RR in hand generated from your Crest deal, use it to pay for an different deal (say Kellogg’s) that will generate another RR for you.

Then, take the Kellogg’s RR to purchase your Crest deal. You could continue alternating the purchases again and again, without limit.

STACKING COUPONS:
Walgreens accepts one manufacturer coupon and a Walgreens store coupon for each item = stacking.

BUY ONE GET ONE COUPONS:
Direct from Walgreens corporate policy: When items are featured in a Buy One, Get One Free promotion, up to two coupons can be used against the items being purchased, as long as the net price does not go below zero for the items being purchased.

GIVE COUPONS IN SPECIFIC ORDER:
Walgreens cash registers are sensitive to the way coupons are applies. So, to make a transaction smoother give coupons in this order:

- manufacturer’s coupon, first
- Wags Store/Ad coupons, second
- RR are last

FILLER ITEMS:
Direct from Walgreen’s corporate policy: The number of manufacturer coupons, including Register Rewards, may not exceed the number of items in the transaction. Store coupons do NOT count toward the total number of coupons.

If you are purchasing 5 items and are using 5 coupons AND a RR toward your final price, you will need 6 items (one for each coupon/rr). Use the cheapest item you can find to use as filler. Look for clearance items or single pencils are great.

WHAT IF MY REGISTER REWARD DOESN’T PRINT?
First, make certain you purchased the correct product (we have a mistakenly purchased a wrong product) Second, you can return the product on the spot. Third, call the manager. Sometimes, I have been given a Walgreens Gift Card for the amount the RR should have been.

OR, contact Catalina Marketing with your receipt in hand and they will send the RR if one was deserved.

My question is where to find coupons on produce and canned foods?

I am very frustrated. I have tried since Sunday to purchase 3 of the Keri lotion deals at Walgreens and every Walgreens in a 10 mile area has none because people take them off the shelves in droves. I have asked for rainchecks and told no. What to do?

This makes us all crazy!! I am sorry for the shelf clearers. I would talk to your store, the manager has the ability to check their computer system of all the stores in your area to see if they have inventory. Also, find out what day their truck comes in and then check back the next morning for product. And always ask, as sometimes you will see the overstocked inventory on the very top shelf, higher than you can probably reach and they may have more in the back.

Hope this helps!

Hi Jennifer: My experience with Walgreens is mixed. They have been out of 5 star product (by Monday) and I now have to go back to get reimbursed where they overcharged me (I was too confused/tired at the store after 2 hours of searching for the right items/coupons). Now I have vouchers that must be used in two weeks for the same product that may no be on a 4-5 star sale before they expire. Can you coach a person on how to smoothly complete the transactions to ensure you are getting the deal you should? I am a newby.

Hi Jen, I was looking in the new coupon booklet for the month at Walgreens, and I noticed that the coupons say manufacture towards the bottom but Instant Value Walgreens at the top. I am thinking that i cant use a manufacture and their coupon together in one purchase? Is that right? Thanks Denise
